Start with a name and a photo.

Your journal can begin with a sketch, a lump of clay or a piece fresh from the wheel. Give it a name, then take a photo or choose one from your phone.

You do not need a finished pot or a complete set of notes to get started. Create a record while the idea is fresh, then return to it as the piece develops.

Keep the making details worth remembering.

Add your clay type, forming method, start date and firing details. The making-details step is optional, so you can record what you know now and fill in the rest later.

  • Identify the clay body you want to use again.
  • Record how you formed and decorated the piece.
  • Keep bisque and glaze firing information with the project.
  • Use notes to capture what worked and what you would change.

Give the finished piece its context.

A photograph shows the result. Your project record explains how you got there. Keep the two together so you can look back before making another mug, bowl or vase.

For example, after a mug comes back from firing, add a finished photo and a note about the handle, glaze coverage or weight of the foot. That gives your next attempt a useful starting point.

For a repeatable note-taking routine, read how to keep a pottery journal.
